Located in the established Canberra suburb of Downer, this custom single-storey residence showcases a refined balance of contemporary design, energy efficiency and everyday liveability.
Designed by the Elevation 7 design team and constructed by Freedom Built, the home features expansive glazing, strong architectural lines and carefully considered indoor-outdoor connections.
To achieve the project’s vision, Performance Windows supplied and fabricated a high-performance window and door package incorporating Alspec ThermAFrame® and ProGlide® systems. The result is a residence that delivers outstanding thermal performance while maximising natural light, views and functionality.
Contemporary Design with a Strong Architectural Presence
The design brief called for a modern, energy-efficient glazing solution that would complement the home’s clean rectilinear form and dark external palette. Slim black aluminium framing was selected to reinforce the contemporary aesthetic, creating a striking contrast against the building envelope while maintaining elegant sightlines throughout.
Full-height windows and expansive sliding door configurations were used extensively to flood interior spaces with natural light and strengthen the connection between the home’s living areas and outdoor entertaining spaces. The use of wide stacking doors further enhances the sense of openness, allowing the residence to seamlessly transition between inside and out.
The framing was finished in AZ Custom Black (GN215A), carefully coordinated with the architectural Dulux black colour scheme to create a cohesive and sophisticated facade.
Meeting Thermal and Performance Requirements
A key challenge for the project was achieving the required 6.0-star NatHERS energy rating while incorporating a high proportion of glazing, including several oversized openings. Large ProGlide stacking doors measuring up to approximately 5.7 metres wide and 3.0 metres high demanded robust structural performance, smooth operation and reliable weather protection.
Privacy requirements also needed to be addressed in selected areas without compromising the overall design language, while all windows and doors were required to meet N3 site performance standards.
Alspec Solutions
Performance Windows combined Alspec ThermAFrame® 101.6mm thermally broken windows and doors with ProGlide® commercial sliding doors to meet the project’s architectural and energy performance requirements.
The ThermAFrame® system, incorporating fixed lights, top-hung awning windows and centre-pocket hinged doors, helped achieve the home’s 6.0-star NatHERS target while maintaining slim black sightlines and expansive glazing.
Large stacker openings were delivered using the ProGlide® system, with heavy-duty interlocks and stainless-steel 150kg TraXtar rollers ensuring smooth operation and long-term durability.
To further enhance thermal performance, the window and door package featured LightBridge Low-E double glazing in a range of configurations, with Decorsatin toughened obscure glass specified for privacy areas. Careful coordination of glazing, seals, screening and solar-control performance ensured every opening met its functional, energy and design requirements.
