Alspec congratulates Former NSW Building Commissioner David Chandler on being appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2026 Australia Day Honours. The award acknowledges his significant service to the building and construction industry, particularly his leadership in improving standards and strengthening consumer protection in NSW.
A UNSW Building Science graduate, Chandler has more than four decades of experience across Australia and the Asia‑Pacific. His career includes being a foundation member of the Project Management Institute in Australia, leading influential industry reviews, and receiving an Order of Australia Medal in 1989 for earlier contributions to the sector.
Chandler is widely recognised for driving reform as NSW Building Commissioner from 2019 to 2024, where he championed compliance, transparency, and improved building quality. Beyond regulatory reform, he has been a leading voice in Modern Methods of Construction, innovation, productivity, and global industry trends. He continues to advise organisations, guide project delivery, and mentor emerging professionals.
He currently contributes to industry education as Industry Engagement Lead for the c4SMC initiative at Western Sydney University.
