The new ACT Government ESA Acton Station brings together ACT Ambulance Service and ACT Fire & Rescue operations within a purpose-built emergency services facility designed to meet demanding operational and performance requirements.
Designed by AMC Architecture and built by Shaw Building Group, the project required a comprehensive façade package incorporating windows, doors, louvres, screening and sunshades. Dark-framed glazing and horizontal shading elements complement the building’s civic character while delivering controlled daylight to offices, response areas and shared spaces.
Meeting Complex Performance Requirements
As a critical infrastructure project, the station was required to achieve high standards of thermal efficiency, acoustics, bushfire protection, weather performance, safety and accessibility. The project also included large storm-louvre assemblies measuring up to 9.4 metres wide, extensive double glazing and BAL-29 compliant openings.
Alspec Solution
Performance Windows delivered an integrated Alspec façade package featuring:
- ThermAFrame® 150mm thermally broken framing for fixed windows, awning windows, commercial hinged doors and a three-track, four-panel sliding door system.
- Hunter EVO® 150mm acoustic framing to meet noise-control requirements.
- Hunter EVO® flush-glazed framing for large fixed storm-louvre assemblies.
- Custom 300mm and 600mm sunshades to manage solar gain and reinforce the architectural design.
- BAL-29 ember screens and Invisi-Gard stainless-steel mesh for enhanced bushfire protection, security and durability.
High-performance double glazing, including Low-E, argon-filled insulated glass units and laminated safety glass configurations, helped reduce heat transfer while meeting the project’s thermal, solar-control, acoustic and security requirements.
Through detailed coordination of windows, doors, glazing, louvres, screens and sunshades, Performance Windows delivered a cohesive façade solution that supports the operational demands, occupant comfort and long-term durability required of a modern emergency services facility.
