Legacy in the Making at Mary St Brick House, Highgate WA

Project Overview

Nestled in the inner-city suburb of Highgate, the Brick House on Mary Street is a striking example of contemporary residential architecture that pays homage to its heritage surroundings. Designed by Studio Roam in collaboration with With Architecture Studio, the home is a thoughtful response to the local context, combining robust materiality with refined detailing.

The project’s name reflects its defining feature: a sculptural brick façade that anchors the building within its streetscape. Behind this textured exterior lies a light-filled, modern home that seamlessly integrates Alspec’s high-performance aluminium systems to achieve both aesthetic and functional excellence.

Alspec Systems

To meet the architectural vision and performance requirements of the Brick House, the following Alspec systems were specified:

  • Swan Evo – Used for hinged door applications, offering clean lines and robust performance.
  • ProGlide Sliding Door System – Installed to maximise indoor-outdoor connectivity, allowing large openings with smooth operation and excellent weather resistance.
  • McArthur Evo Centre Pocket Framing – Selected for its versatility and strength, ideal for fixed and operable window configurations throughout the home.
  • Awning Windows – Integrated to provide controlled ventilation and complement the overall façade design.

Each system was configured to suit the unique spatial and environmental demands of the residence, with particular attention paid to thermal performance, acoustic insulation, and visual continuity.

Design Highlights

The Brick House is a masterclass in balancing privacy with openness. The front elevation, composed of a rhythmic brick screen, shields the interior from the street while allowing filtered light to penetrate the living spaces. Internally, the layout unfolds around a central courtyard, creating a tranquil retreat that blurs the boundary between inside and out.

Alspec’s systems played a critical role in realising this vision. The ProGlide sliding doors open generously to the courtyard, while the McArthur Evo framing supports expansive glazing that brings natural light deep into the home. The Swan Evo doors and awning windows add further flexibility and refinement to the building envelope.

Fabrication & Construction

ZaZa Aluminium delivered precision fabrication of the Alspec systems, ensuring seamless integration with the architectural detailing. Assemble Building Co executed the build with meticulous craftsmanship, bringing the design to life with a focus on quality and longevity.

The Mary St Brick House exemplifies how thoughtful design and premium materials can elevate residential architecture. Through the use of Alspec’s advanced aluminium systems, the project achieves a harmonious blend of durability, performance, and visual sophistication—setting a benchmark for urban living in Western Australia.
