Brisbane, QLD – In a major step forward for sustainable manufacturing in Australia, Alspec, Alspex, and Rio Tinto have joined forces to create a closed-loop aluminium recycling program that supports local industry, reduces emissions, and strengthens the Queensland supply chain.
Introducing 20-13 by Alspec: A Closed-Loop Aluminium Supply Chain

The initiative begins with post-production aluminium scrap generated by Alspec and Alspex. Instead of being discarded, this valuable material is collected, sorted, and sent to Rio Tinto’s Boyne Smelters Limited (BSL) in Gladstone—one of Australia’s largest aluminium smelting operations. Powered by hydroelectric energy, BSL remelts the scrap and transforms it into high-quality aluminium billets containing a minimum of 20% recycled content.
These billets are then returned to Alspex, where they are extruded into new aluminium profiles. The finished extrusions are supplied to local fabricators and manufacturers, who use them to produce windows, doors, and other aluminium-based products—all proudly made in Australia.
Why 20% Recycled Aluminium Matters
This new offering from Alspec, branded as 20-13 by Alspec, is ideal for projects that prioritise sustainability and compliance with evolving industry standards. Key benefits include:
- Green Star Credits: The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) encourages the use of recycled content and low-carbon materials in certified projects.
- Government Tender Compliance: Many local, state, and federal tenders now require low-emission materials and give preference to Australian-made content.
- Sustainability as a Value-Add: Developers and architects increasingly promote sustainability as a key differentiator in multi-unit housing and apartment projects.
A Step Toward a Greener Future
This partnership marks a significant milestone in Australia’s journey toward a circular economy. By integrating recycled aluminium into the supply chain, Alspec, Alspex, and Rio Tinto are not only reducing environmental impact, but also empowering specifiers and builders to make more sustainable choices.
The 20-13 by Alspec initiative reflects a broader commitment to environmental responsibility, ethical sourcing, and local manufacturing excellence—setting a new benchmark for sustainability in the Australian building industry.
