Spatial Poetry at Henville St House, South Fremantle WA

Project Overview

Located in the coastal suburb of South Fremantle, the Henville St House is a refined residential project that exemplifies the thoughtful integration of architecture, materiality, and environmental responsiveness. Designed by Philip Stejkal Architecture, the home was recognised in the 2025 Houses Awards for its innovative approach to suburban living.

The design responds to its narrow urban site with a series of interconnected volumes that balance privacy, light, and openness. Central to this approach is the strategic use of Alspec’s aluminium systems, which enable generous glazing, seamless transitions, and robust performance in a coastal climate.

Alspec Systems

To meet the architectural and environmental demands of the project, the following Alspec systems were specified:

  • Swan Evo Hinged Door System
Used throughout the home for external access points, Swan Evo provides clean sightlines and durable performance. Its configuration supports both single and double door setups, contributing to the home’s flexible spatial flow.
  • ProGlide High Performance Sliding Door System
Installed to maximise connectivity between indoor living areas and outdoor courtyards, ProGlide allows large openings with smooth, reliable operation. Its high thermal and acoustic performance makes it ideal for Fremantle’s variable coastal conditions.

These systems were fabricated by ZaZa Aluminium, ensuring precision installation and alignment with the architectural detailing.

Design Highlights

The Henville St House is defined by its layered spatial composition and material richness. Internally, the home features a restrained palette of timber, concrete, and aluminium, creating a calm and tactile environment. Externally, the building’s form is articulated through a series of setbacks and courtyards that enhance natural light and ventilation.

Alspec’s systems play a pivotal role in this composition. The ProGlide sliding doors open wide to the central courtyard, dissolving the boundary between inside and out. Swan Evo doors are used to punctuate the façade and provide secure, elegant access points.

Construction & Collaboration

Burgio Construction delivered the build with a focus on craftsmanship and detail, working closely with the architect and fabricator to ensure the integrity of the design was maintained throughout construction.

The Henville St House is a testament to the power of collaboration and considered design. Through the use of Alspec’s Swan Evo and ProGlide systems, the project achieves a seamless blend of performance, aesthetics, and liveability—setting a benchmark for contemporary residential architecture in Western Australia.
