Supporting Remote Community Training Through Aluminium Donations

As part of AIS and Alspec’s ongoing commitment to supporting the communities in which we work, AIS recently donated aluminium sheet to Plate Alloy Australia (PAA). PAA not only specialises in aluminium boat building but also delivers essential welding and fabrication training to Aboriginal communities across remote regions of Australia.

For many of these communities, aluminium boats are vital for transport, fishing, employment, and everyday life. By providing hands‑on welding skills, PAA empowers locals to repair and maintain their own vessels – building long‑term capability, reducing reliance on external services, and strengthening community independence. Donations of surplus aluminium play a direct role in enabling these programs to reach more people as demand continues to grow.

From Scrap Material to Community Value

The aluminium supplied by AIS has already been transformed into meaningful learning tools, including:

  • Welding practice plates: Sheets were cut into smaller pieces, giving participants safe, practical opportunities to develop their welding technique.
  • Cultural art shapes: Additional material was routed into traditional animal designs, blending craftsmanship with cultural storytelling and allowing trainees to create personal pieces of art.

PAA’s John Pontifex expressed the communities’ gratitude, noting that “they are very appreciative of any material that can be donated, also the skills that they learn,” and emphasised the pride PAA takes in delivering these initiatives.
